Artist Statement
My work features layers across time and I am fascinated by distressed and decayed surfaces, neglect and rejuvenation, glimpses from the past and how these relate to life today. A key interest is decaying industrial landscapes where nature is re-establishing itself as an allegory for the historic societal domination by man from which women are emerging: hard man-made surfaces reimagined in softer woman-made textiles.
My role as Artist-in-Residence for Abbotsford (near Melrose), the historic home of writer Walter Scott, investigates Scott’s use of nature and trees to support his mental health challenges, thinking both about mental health in the 19th century and today. This culminates in an art trail in Abbotsford’s walled garden in May 2026.
I take a mixed media approach: dyeing/painting/printing especially discharge, monoprinting and ecoprinting. I am interested in transparency, views through, holes, layers, texture and 3-D work. City & Guilds Diploma: Stitched Textiles 2024.
