Artist Statement
My textiles are most often a response to textures in the world around me. I’m fascinated by the surface qualities of natural forms such as rocks, lichen and rugged landscapes. I enjoy creating representational work as well as more abstract pieces. I generally work intuitively, responding to materials and techniques and seeing what happens, as I find this is a more creative process.
Although embroidery and textiles are my first love, drawing and painting is a key part of my practice and I regularly undertake portrait commissions and paint landscapes. Bringing these two disciplines together is now one of the main focuses of my work and many of my pieces combine painting with embroidery on paper.
I studied Embroidered and Woven Textiles at Glasgow School of Art and have spent many years teaching art and textiles privately and in secondary schools. I also run online courses.
