Artist Statement

I came to textiles via the City & Guilds Certificate and Diploma courses, after many years of part-time study in drawing, life-drawing and painting.

In my work I often use appliqué and patchwork techniques, together with detailed embroidery. I like to mix fabrics and threads, including silk, linen, cotton and wool. I am very interested in how colour is perceived and I often use natural dyes such as madder, indigo and logwood to colour my materials.

I develop my work through sketchbooks and observation. Recent work has been inspired by the paintings of Paul Klee and Georgia O’Keefe and by the photography of Karl Blossfeldt.
