Anita Hutchison

Artist Statement

Anita describes her artwork as drawings in fabric and thread. They are abstract, sculptural, tactile and visual, constructed with a variety of materials along with traditional art, craft and sewing techniques.

Her degrees have given her the observational and creative qualities of an artist and designer alongside the researching and recording techniques of academia.

The artwork is designed to record and preserve (memories and details), and to disseminate information to others. Each piece telling a story and preserving a memory. The work starts by abstracting ideas, patterns and details, from plants and nature, man-made objects, or items found beach combing, to make designs for mixed media textiles, art books or sculptural pieces, incorporating words, images, pattern and materials, using a range of art and textile techniques.
