Artist Statement

A major influence on my work has always been the natural environment, notably that of the ‘debatable lands’ on the Anglo-Scottish border and recently that of the arable farmland of East Lothian in particular. One virtually untouched by human intervention and the other subjected over millennia to increasing agricultural technologies and urban development, reflecting mans ‘need’ to tame and regulate his environment.

Using a variety of techniques, in particular shibori, to form repetitive elements representative of those imposed by man over the centuries, combined with free-hand stitched marks and textures, I am exploring how man-made forms are reclaimed and reconfigured, even recycled, in an organic manner by the natural world.
