Artist Statement
I’ve always pursued Textile Art alongside my commercial design and illustration work, as a creative outlet unlimited by functional considerations. My textile work is driven fundamentally by the impetus to communicate an idea or issue, message or mood. I hope to draw the audience into a seductive and immersive image that inspires reflection. I work in series, with past inspiration including ‘The Seven Deadly Sins’, ‘Death Becomes her’, ‘Environmental’ and ‘Orkney – A selective memory’ – an exploration of landscape and folklore from my childhood roots. The most recent work, ‘Wilful Optimism’ is an unapologetic and joyous juxtaposition of lush, intense colour and texture, intended as a determined celebration of light, hope and positivity amid increasingly difficult circumstances for us all. I work with various techniques including fabric manipulation, hand-embroidery and knit, celebrating rich colour, tone and texture.
