Red Bologna

Travel has always inspired my work along with a love of colour and pattern, so it was no surprise that my photographs of the old city of Bologna, should lead to some design experiments.

On this occasion I worked on some of the pattern elements derived from the architecture, playing with them on paper and on the computer, trying to build up something abstract but still embodying the spirit of the city. I also made some experimental pieces of felt.

My final design was a lot simpler than the semi-circular structure I had favoured at first and gave me a basic composition to which I could add a lot of detail as I stitched. The use of plastered fabric provided a contrast in texture and a direct reference to the old walls themselves.
