Spent Forces
This piece commemorates the lives of British and NATO Servicemen who have died in Afghanistan since 2001, and takes the same theme as an earlier piece of work ‘A tissue of Lies’. At the start of this project in late 2009 British losses stood at 250, casualties to date now exceed 320.
Using spent cartridges collected on walks in the Pentland Hills (a military training area) to represent loss and sacrifice, I am experimenting with stiffened bandages to construct a ‘used cartridge belt’.
Photos show sketch book ideas, a partly finished piece displayed in 2 ways, and a small piece of stitched distressed paper which may be the starting point for a new piece of work.
