Family Ties

My starting point for this work came via my daughter’s research into family history. I was intrigued to find that within a few generations our family has evolved from being poor, mainly uneducated farm workers to well educated people in a variety of the professions.

My ancestors came from Ireland to Scotland due to the Irish potato famine. I became aware of their integration into Scottish life, their strong work and family ethic. Despite life being very hard and uncertain they maintained an irrepressible joie de vivre. I am keen to celebrate this in my pieces, showing weddings, ceilidhs, market days, etc.

I soon found that sketches translated quickly into stitch and some use of colour. However, I now find that I am being drawn towards making an installation of 3D figures.

This is the point I have reached.
