The Hospitalfield Collections Care Volunteers
The first event of a year long programme that looks at the impact of Light and Time on our world and the way that we read it.
Exploring the urgency to conserve textiles; from the hours invested in making and stitching to the very current and often changing questions of the conservation and display of items that are materially so fragile.
Inspired by the historic textiles, clothing, and costumes at Hospitalfield which are charged with the stories of this place, our speakers will bring in to focus the layers of value that lie within the centuries of history of cloth. They will use examples of collections held at the V&A as well as recently created collections such as the astonishing 20th century design of Bernat Klein.

WARPED 2023 EXHIBITION
PRISM Textiles returns to the Art Pavilion in Mile End, E3 with their latest exhibition Warped, from 20 April to 1 May 2023
If you think the world has already been turned on its axis in recent years, be prepared for things the get “curiouser and curiouser” as the exhibiting artists present their interpretation of the word warped. The work on show covers a wide range of intertwining themes, from gastropods to dysfunctional relationships, menstruation to environmental concerns and maritime history to folk tradition and memory. Alongside the more usual fabric and thread are found objects such as a treadle sewing machine and lace bobbins and more unusual materials, porcelain, jesmonite, driftwood, sea threads and metal bolts, skilfully woven together to create contemporary pieces of textile art.
Katharine Paton-King, Chair of PRISM Textiles, said:
“We are delighted to be returning to the Art Pavilion in Mile End for a third year. The gallery is beautiful space to showcase the diverse, high-quality textile-inspired work. by our members around the theme of Warped. We are extremely lucky to have such a high standard of work to choose from within the group, along with a host of interesting interpretations of our theme.”
The exhibition is supported by Tower Hamlets
MINIATURE ART – MARIA WALKER
Priam member Maria Walker is usually known for making large scale sculptural artwork but when all of her planned exhibitions were cancelled or postponed, she discovered another creative outlet.
Whilst scrolling through Instagram she saw an open call for miniature art work from The House of Smalls, a gallery in a collection of dolls houses curated by Amy Oliver. All the exhibitions were physical and predominantly women- centric. During 2021 and 2022 Maria exhibited her small-scale work in five separate exhibitions.
Initially Maria found working on a smaller scale challenging but she soon got her eye in and started to find objects to use in her sculptural work. The selected work has to be sent to Amy who then curated the exhibition, which ran on social media for a month. Each day the work of one artist was featured as well as images of the work in situ in the exhibition.
Maria says, “it was a very liberating experience as it allowed me to test out my ideas on a small scale, The fact the pieces were physically present in the gallery allowed be to see that they would look like in a real gallery. The images of the gallery rooms were so realistic that it has caused some confusion and people have been surprised when they saw the actual size of the artwork. I am really looking forward to making work for future exhibitions”
